Ethiopia Collects 653 Billion Birr in Nine Months, Surpassing Revenue Targets

The Ministry of Revenue announced that it has collected 653.2 billion birr in the first nine months of the 2017 fiscal year, exceeding projections and marking a 2% increase (79 billion birr) from the same period last year. 

Minister Aynalem Nikussi attributed the achievement to technological modernization, strengthened electronic payment systems, and improved enforcement against illegal practices. A campaign is underway to reward honest taxpayers, reinforcing a culture of tax compliance. 

Customs Commissioner Debele Kebeta stressed the need for research-driven measures to combat smuggling. Meanwhile, the House of Peoples’ Representatives urged further action on digital tax systems, taxpayer outreach, and monitoring the proper use of tax-free goods. 

Standing Committee Chair Desalegn Wedaje highlighted the importance of expanding the taxpayer base and improving service delivery. The ministry’s performance reflects ongoing efforts to boost internal revenue capacity and ensure sustainable development financing.
