Ethiopia to Host Continental Climate Leadership

Ethiopia is set to host the Second African Climate Summit in Addis Ababa from September 8 to 10, 2025, to serve as a catalyst for coordinated African action on climate change, the Ministry of Planning and Development announced.

State Minister Seyoum Mekonnen reaffirmed the country’s steadfast commitment to climate resilience and its ambition to play a more prominent role on the global stage.

Ethiopia, in solidarity with fellow African nations, is resolute in fulfilling its climate obligations and amplifying the continent’s voice in international climate discourse, he stated.

Beyond its diplomatic significance, the Summit serves as a strategic platform for Ethiopia to spotlight its homegrown climate initiatives—including expansive renewable energy projects, climate-smart agriculture, and ambitious forest restoration efforts. It also aims to galvanize investment in green infrastructure and unlock new streams of climate financing.

According to sources within the Ministry, the Summit is also poised to foster innovation by strengthening ties with academic and research institutions. A key focus will be mobilizing youth through climate activism and sustainability-driven initiatives, ensuring the next generation is at the forefront of environmental stewardship.

This event marks the first time Ethiopia will host a high-level summit exclusively dedicated to climate issues, underscoring a milestone in the nation’s evolving environmental policy landscape. The inaugural African Climate Summit, held in Nairobi, Kenya, in 2023, laid the foundation for pan-African collaboration on climate challenges. Ethiopia’s hosting of the second edition is widely seen as a move to turn pan-continental dialogue into tangible, localized solutions and actionable policies.
