In a social media post earlier today, the Prime Minister acknowledged Varnero’s enduring contributions to Ethiopia’s capital, describing him as a “pillar in the modern development of Addis Abeba.”

Over a career spanning more than five decades, Varnero played a pivotal role in the planning and construction of major infrastructure projects that transformed the city’s skyline. He was widely respected not only for his engineering expertise but also for his commitment to sustainable urban design.

Originally from Italy, Varnero made Ethiopia his home during the post-imperial period and was instrumental in mentoring generations of local engineers and architects. Many of his protégés have gone on to lead major public works and private sector projects.

Friends and colleagues remember him as a principled professional, fiercely dedicated to his craft and to the country’s development. His legacy is etched into the foundations of many iconic buildings and public spaces in the capital.

Funeral arrangements have yet to be announced by the family. As the nation reflects on his life’s work, Alberto Varnero’s contributions are likely to remain a cornerstone of Ethiopia’s built environment for decades to come.
