The Committee to Protect Journalists (CPJ) has demanded the immediate release of Tesfalem Woldeyes, the founder and editor-in-chief of Ethiopian Insider, who was arrested by Ethiopian security forces on June 1, 2017.
Tesfalem was charged with “spreading false information” and was granted bail of 15,000 birr by the court. However, police refused to release him, stating they would appeal the bail decision. He remains in custody.
Mutoki Mumo, CPJ’s Africa Program Director, criticized the detention as a violation of due process. Attempts to get comments from Ethiopian authorities were unsuccessful.
