Ethiopia Enhances Financial Support for Climate-Vulnerable Farmers

Ethiopia is strengthening support for smallholder farmers and pastoralists vulnerable to climate change by improving access to finance and insurance. Minister of Agriculture Dr. Girma Amente reported that the 10-year development plan has increased domestic wheat production to meet national demand, eliminating the need for imports.

The Green Legacy Program, involving annual seedling planting, contributes to food self-sufficiency. The Lemat Heritage Program aims to promote food sovereignty and diversify diets. Recognising the increased vulnerability of small-scale farmers and pastoralists to climate change, Ethiopia has implemented measures to address its impact.
The Agricultural and Rural Development Policy facilitates easier access to financial loans for small-scale farmers. These initiatives strengthen financial and insurance capabilities, enhancing productivity. The Minister emphasised the importance of stakeholder cooperation and coordination to establish an inclusive financial system for rural development.
