Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed (PhD) – Eid al-Adha Greetings

Welcome to the 1446th Eid al-Adha

Eid al-Adha reminds us of two deeply significant values—sacrifice and unity—both of which are vital in building a prosperous Ethiopia.

Eid al-Adha is a sacred occasion that commemorates the spirit of sacrifice. It honors the moment when Prophet Ibrahim, out of his own free will and unwavering devotion, was prepared to sacrifice his son Ismail to the Creator. There is no greater act of submission or obedience than offering one’s own child for the sake of divine command.

A nation is built through sacrifice—by giving up what we hold dear for the greater good. A country thrives when each generation makes sacrifices so that the next may live better.

Prophet Ibrahim was ultimately given a ram by Allah in place of his son. But the essence of the story remains: true sacrifice lies in the willingness to give oneself. In Ibrahim’s heart, the sacrifice had already been made. A generation that benefits from its nation does so because the generation before it sacrificed for it.

Our mothers and fathers gave their lives for the freedom and sovereignty of our country. For this, they earned eternal and historical honor. Yet, they did not receive an earthly reward that could match the value of life. That reward is passed down to us. And what we sacrifice today will be the inheritance of those who follow us.

Arafah is also a day that signifies reunion and recognition. The phrase “Wa ’Arafatani wa ’Arafatu” means “Know me, and I know you.” It marks the day when Adam and Eve, after being separated for a long time following their expulsion from Paradise, were reunited. Arafah is a holiday where people who have been apart come together.

The tragedy lies not in being apart, but in choosing to remain divided. Differences in thought, opinion, grievances, and historical events may have distanced us. But as children of one nation, we must seek connection over separation—just as Adam and Eve did.

For us, national consultation is that bridge. It is the platform where diverse thoughts and aspirations converge; where we listen, understand, empathize, and recognize one another. It is a peaceful space where we can say, “You know me, and I know you.”

As we celebrate Arafah, let us also continue to nurture and strengthen this platform of national consultation.
Happy Eid al-Adha once again.

May Ethiopia be blessed by the efforts of her children and live on in glory!

May the Creator bless Ethiopia and all her people!
